LUMINIÈšA CUNA
Recent am învățat despre Luminița Cuna. Luminița Cuna s-a născut în România în timpul lui Ceaușescu. Când era mică, îi plăcea să citească și să învețe cât putea. O dată, s-a uitat la un documentar despre coloniștii portughezi în Amazon. De când s-a uitat la documentarul acesta, a vrut să se ducă în Amazon. Acum, Luminița Cuna lucrează cu indigenii din pădurea amazoniană, a făcut un documentar și a scris o carte despre ei. Ea vrea să ajute oamenii indigeni să protejeze pământul lor și să schimbe cum să se poarte oamenii cu planeta. Mulți oameni se gândesc la indigeni ca oameni care nu sunt civilizați, dar ei nu sunt așa. Ei știu cum să păstreze natura mult mai bine decât noi. Trebuie să încercăm să învățăm de la ei în loc să îi ignorăm.
Recently I learned about Luminița Cuna. Luminița Cuna was born in Romania during the time of Ceaușescu. When she was young, she liked to read and to learn as much as she could. One time, she watched a documentary about Portuguese colonists in the Amazon. Since she watched this documentary, she has wanted to go to the Amazon. Now, Luminița Cuna works with the indigenous people in the Amazon Rainforest and she made a documentary and wrote a book about them. She wants to help indigenous people protect their land and to change how people treat Earth. Many people think of indigenous people like they’re uncivilized, but they’re not like that. They know how to keep their nature healthy much better than we do. We need to try to learn from them instead of ignoring them.
IOANA COZMUÈšA
Ioana Cozmuța s-a născut în România în timpul comunismului. Întotdeauna a vrut mai multă informație decât a putut să găsească atunci. Vorbea mult cu tatăl ei despre știință. Când a fost mai mare, s-a dus la o universitate ca să studieze economie dar s-a răzgândit când era în școală și a început să studieze fizică. Acum, Ioana lucrează pentru NASA și are o companie. Ea vrea să ducă toată infrastructura care nu este bună pentru Pământul în spațiu. Ea crede că așa putem să rezolvăm problema climatică. Ea vrea să imaginăm un viitor mai bun.
Ioana Cozmuța was born in Romania in the time of communism. She always wanted more information than there was available during that time. She would talk a lot with her father about science. When she was older, she went to university to study economics but she changed her mind while she was in school and started to study physics. Now, Ioana works for NASA and she has her own company. She wants to take all polluting infrastructure that nots good for the Earth in space. She believes that this is how we can solve the climate crisis. She wants us to imagine a better future this way.
Vară în România - Summer in Romania
Când eram mai mică, mă duceam în fie care în românia să-mi văd familia. Prima dată când m-am dus în românia eram atât de mica că nici nu-mi amintesc nimic. Am avut un an. M-am dus la românia de mai multe ori de când atuncea. Am fost de atât de multe ori că nu prea pot să le separ în mintea mea. Îmi amintesc o vară eu cu fratele meu È™i veriÈ™oara mea ne-am dus la È™trand aproape în fiecare zi. Eram arse când s-o terminat fără. Ne trezeam în fiecare dimineață È™i mâncam, dupaia tot întrebam È™i întrebam dacă putem să ne ducem la È™trand dar bunica mea nu ne lăsa să plecăm până nu aÈ™teptăm cel puÈ›in o oră să nu ne simÈ›im rău. Dupaceia când ajungeam la È™tram trebuiam să aÈ™teptăm È™i mai mult până intrăm în apă pentru că trebuiam să ne facem cu cremă de soare. Dupaia stăteam ore la È™trand – aproape până să făcea timpu să mâncăm cină. Este foarte diferit în statele unite. În Washington este prea frig să fiu piscine afară deci aproape toate sunt înăuntru. Când te duci la piscină în Washington, nu-È›i pui crema de soare È™i nici o dată mi sa spus să aÈ™tept o ora după ce mănânc. De obicei doar stau o ora sau doua când mă duc la piscină. Nu È™tiu de ce doar să te duci la piscină în america este foarte diferit de dus la piscină în românia.
When I was younger, I would go every summer to visit my family in Romania. The first time when I went to Romania I was so young that I can’t even remember it. I was one year old. I’ve been to Romania many more times since then. I’ve been so many times that I can’t separate them in my head. I remember one summer my brother, my cousin, and I went to the pool almost every day. We were burnt when the summer was over. We would wake up every morning and we would eat, and then we would keep asking if we could go to the pool but my grandmother would let us leave until we waited an hour so we wouldn’t feel sick. Afterward when we would get to the pool, we would have to wait even more because we would have to put on sunscreen. We would stay hours at the pool – almost until dinnertime. It’s very different in the United States. In Washington it’s too cold to have pools outside so almost all of them are indoor. When you go to the pool in Washington, you don’t put sunscreen on and I’ve never been told to wait an hour after I eat before I swim. Usually I just stay an hour or two when I go to the pool here. I don’t know why but going to the pool in the US is very different from going to the pool in Romania.
CUMPÄ‚RÄ‚TURI ÎN ROMÂNIA - SHOPPING IN ROMANIA
Să mă duc la cumpârături în România este foarte diferită de mersul la cumpârături în America. Eu de obicei mă duc la cumpărături de mâncare la Trader Joe’s, Safeway, sau Costco. Toate sunt foarte diferite dar este foarte clar că acest magazine sunt din Statele Unite, nu România. În Statele Unite, coridoarele sunt foarte mari È™i toată mâncarea vine în pachete foarte mari. De obicei nu poÈ›i să cumperi lucruri individuale. Este foarte comun să fie mult mai multă mâncare decât poÈ›i să mănânci într-un pachet. Este foarte ineficient. Asta se vede foarte mult la Costco pentru că Costco este un magazin unde lumea poate să cumpăra mâncare en gros. Probabil crezi că restaurante sau oameni cu famili foarte mari cumpără mâncare de acolo dar aproape toată lumea cumpără de acolo. În America, 40% din mâncare este irosit, È™i se vede în cum se vinde mâncarea. În România, vezi că mai multă mâncarea vândut individual decât la pachet. În plus, România doar iroseÈ™te 17.6% din mâncarea cumpărată. Traders Joe’s, Safeway, È™i Costco toate sunt magazine mari. Cănd mă duc la cumpârături în România, magazinele sau sunt mari È™i poÈ›i să cumperi ori ce, sau sunt mici sî doar poÈ›i să cumperi câteva lucruri specifice. De asemenea, mai mulÈ›i oameni cumpăr mâncare la piață în România. Este foarte comun să-È›i cumperi toate fructele È™i legumele la piață, dar în Statele Unite oameni nu cumpăr mâncare la piață. Aste este păcat pentru că când cumperi mâncare de la piață, este mai bun pentru mediul È™i pentru fermieri È™i agricultura.
Going shopping in Romania is very different from shopping in America. I usually go shopping at Trader Joe’s, Safeway, or Costco. They’re all very different but they’re very clearly American, not Romanian. In the United States, the aisles are very large and all the food comes in bulk packages. Usually, you can’t buy individual items. It is very common for there to buy more food than you can eat in one package. It’s very wasteful. This can be seen at Costco because Costco is a store where people buy things in bulk. You’d probably think that restaurants or very large families buy food from there but almost everybody shops there. In the US, 40% of food is wasted, and this can be seen in how our food is sold. In addition, Romania only wastes 17.6% of food bought. Trader Joe’s, Safeway, and Costco are all large stores. Whenever I go shopping in Romania, the stores are either large and you can buy anything, or they’re small and you can only buy a few specific things. In addition, more people shop at the farmer’s market in Romania. It’s very common to buy all your fruits and vegetables at the farmer’s market, but in the US people don’t buy food from the farmer’s market. This is a pity because when you buy food from the farmer’s market, it’s better for the environment and for farmers and agriculture.
